I ended up with something called polymiositis and peripheral neuropathy.<br />It seemed to start on Saturday 11/26/05. I woke up on the couch after falling asleep the night before watching a movie. I had lower back pain (which is fairly normal for me) and the top of my left foot was hurting. I thought I had just kicked something the day before and forgot all about it. I went to work Monday and both feet felt a little funny and I still had the lower back pain. I thought maybe I had a pinched nerve and didn't think much of it. By Friday both of my feet hurt really bad. I knew I had to go to the doctor at that point. I figured I would wait until Monday and make an appointment with my family doctor. Well... I woke up on Saturday morning with really bad pain in my legs from my knees down. I went to the emergency room and they gave me some pain pills and sent me home telling me to go see my family doctor. I woke up Sunday morning and the pain was worst. I went to the emergency room again and they did the same thing. They gave me stronger pain pills and told me to make an appointment with my family doctor. I woke up on Monday morning and I had to crawl to go to the bathroom. My legs were swollen 3 times their normal size from the knees down to my toes. My feet looked like Fred Flintstone's. I also had a strange rash all over my body. I went to a bigger hospital's emergency room this time thinking they would surely take care of me since they had specialists there. By this time I was in excruciating pain. My mother, my sister, my girlfriend, and I were begging them to keep me and do whatever they could to figure out what was going on. They did find some elevated level of something in my blood. They still told me the same thing. Make an appointment with my family doctor. I called my family doctor that evening and asked him if he could get me in. I went to see him the next day. He took one look at my legs and started scratching his head. He said what he thought it might be and then brought in his partner. He scratched his head also. He immediately got me a room at the hospital that he does his business with. He also called in a neurologist. The neurologist got there pretty quickly and diagnosed me with Guillian Barre. He ordered up something called IVIG. It was 5 nights of an 8 hour drip intravenously. He also ordered up some serious pain medication. I was in serious agony. On the 5th night of the drip the swelling in my legs went down. It was really weird. About 5 hours into the drip it felt like someone was squeezing my feet. I looked up a little later and the swelling was almost completely gone. They then gave me a few steroid treatments intravenously for a couple of days. They then sent me home. I was still in bad shape but they thought I was over the hump and things would get better. A couple days later the pain got worst and the swelling came back. I then went back to the hospital. What really sucked was it was Christmas day. The emergency room doctor took pictures of my rash because it was so strange. She wanted to show her students who were going to be there the next day. At the hospital they basically were just controlling the pain and running blood tests. The IVIG treatment I received had a half life of 120 days and they really couldn't do any other treatments. My family doctor and the neurologist came to see me every day to see if I was making progress. The neurologist wanted a second opinion so they sent me back to the big hospital where I begged them to keep me in the first place. It was a learning hospital and they had a team of neurologists looking at me. They did an EMG (which tests the conductivity of the nerves) and found the nerves in my legs weren't conducting very well. They ended up diagnosing me with peripheral neuropathy and polymiositis. They said that I had mono and when my immune system attacked that it ended up attacking my muscles and nerves in my legs also. So here I am 2 months later still not able to go back to work. I am getting better. I am able to walk now with no assisting devices. I am still in some pain. I had to go to a pain management doctor to have him put me on some serious pain medicine. I am going through physical therapy also. I think that's helping a lot. I can't wait to get back to work. I still would like to fish for a living but I really don't think work is for the dogs any more.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--
